What we buy

The market does not allow dumping, so we price the whole lot, not just the best cases.

We buy

  • Surplus and overstockMore than tonight's buyers will take.
  • Ripe and short-dated productSound, with only a few days left.
  • Turned-down and rejected loadsTurned down for temperature, color, size or decay.
  • Trade-outsProduct you took back and now need gone.
  • Mixed palletsSeveral items on one pallet, sorted or not.
  • Out-of-spec, crushed or damaged casesPriced on what is still sellable.

We pass on

  • Recalls and holdsUnder a recall or a food-safety hold.
  • Consigned loads not clearedWe need the shipper's OK before we buy.
  • Anything but fresh produceNo dry goods, dairy, meat or plants.
  • Pickups far from the marketPut the address on your request. If it is too far, we say so.

How it works

  1. Photos

Any hour, by form or text

Shoot the cases, one label and the count, with your unit and door. We log the load under a REF and text you back so you know it arrived.

  2. Estimate

    We reply during market hours

A written price per case and for the lot, and the time it is good until. Estimate only. Final price after we inspect at pickup.

  3. Pickup and final offer

At your door, after we inspect

We bring our own truck and pallet jack and pay our own gate fee, check the count against your photos and name a final offer you can decline. We inspect at your door. A sale happens only when we both confirm, for what we load.

  4. Paid to your firm

    Under PACA prompt-payment rules

Same Day ACH, RTP transfer or company check to the registered firm. You get a signed confirmation with lot, marks, quantity, per-case prices, date, time and photos, for your records and your shipper.

Three ways to move a load

Sell it to Salida (Buyer)
We buy it after we inspect it at your door.
Find me a buyer (Broker)
We arrange a sale to a buyer in our network. We never own it.
Help me donate it
We arrange a pickup by a nonprofit partner. The nonprofit issues any receipt.

Reconditioning for turned-down loads

Reconditioning is sorting a soft, mixed or turned-down load case by case, pulling the units that will not sell and repacking the sound product. It works when part of the load is still sound, because that part can be sold instead of dumped. You send the load to our repacking facility, the product stays yours, and when the work is done your own truck picks it up. The charge is agreed with you in writing before work starts.

  1. Sort by condition

We open the load and give every case a condition class: A sound, B needs sorting, C for processing, D donate or compost.

  2. Cull and trim

Class C cases go to processing and class D cases to donation or compost. We pull the soft and bruised units out of class B cases by hand and trim what can be saved.

  3. Repack and relabel

Sound product goes into new, clean cartons with a Salida label and a new lot code linked to your original lot. Your brand does not go on the repacked cartons.

  4. Pick up

When the work is done, your own truck picks up the repacked pallet at our facility, and every count goes on your recovery statement.

Every reconditioned load comes with a written recovery statement: what came in, what was repacked, what was pulled and where it went.

To ask for it, call or text the desk at (484) 787-5229 before you submit the load.

How estimates are priced

Five things set the number, and the estimate shows them so you can check the math. Asking costs nothing, and you never have to accept.

Commodity and pack
What it is, how it is packed and the count per case.
Condition
Our own class, A to D, from sound to donate or compost. Set from your photos, checked at your door.
Days of shelf life
How many selling days it has once it leaves your 50°F floor.
Volume
Cases or pallets, one item or mixed, and how much of a truck it fills.
The day's USDA report
Our final prices reference the day's USDA Market News Philadelphia terminal report, which also prices lots in poor condition.

Where your product goes

It leaves the market on our truck. We do not resell it to your customers at the market.

  • Off the market floorWe resell outside 6700 Essington Ave, away from the buyers who shop your unit.
  • Kept between usWe do not tell other houses what you sold us or what you were long on.
  • Labels stay onPlease keep labels and lot codes on the cases. We record them for traceability.
  • The remainderWhat cannot be sold goes to donation or compost, never back to your dock. Ask where a lot went and we will tell you.

Questions

Something else? Call or text the desk at (484) 787-5229.

How and when do you pay?

We pay only the registered business, never an individual, by Same Day ACH, RTP transfer or company check. We never pay cash on the dock.

Our purchases are subject to PACA's prompt-payment rules. Unless other payment terms are agreed in writing before the deal, payment is due within 10 days after the day the produce is accepted; a cash sale means payment within 24 hours.

When is the lot actually sold?

The number we send online is an estimate based on your photos and description. It is not an offer or an agreement to buy. We inspect the product at pickup, and a sale happens only when both sides sign the pickup confirmation, for the exact quantity we load.

At pickup we may change the price for condition, take only part of the lot, or decline it. You may decline our final offer. If no confirmation is signed, neither side owes anything.

Ownership passes to us when loading is complete and the confirmation is signed. Every confirmation states whether Salida is acting as Buyer or Broker.

Once we finish loading and both sides sign the confirmation, our acceptance is final. We make no later claim for condition or quality beyond what the confirmation records.

Do you have a PACA license?

PACA license: pending. PACA requires a license for anyone who buys or sells more than 2,000 lb of produce in a day. The number will go on this page and on every confirmation once it is issued.

Do you buy turned-down or consigned loads?

Yes. Send photos and the reason it was turned down. If the load is consigned, we need the shipper's OK before we buy it.

Under PACA, dumping 5% or more of a consigned lot requires a government inspection certificate. Our signed confirmation, with per-case prices and your photos, records what the lot sold for that day for your shipper accounting.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Is there a minimum?

No set minimum. We price the whole lot, so a few cases is fine if that is all of it. If a lot is too small to send a truck for, we will tell you.

Can I send a load after hours?

Yes. Requests are accepted at any hour; we reply during market hours. Same-night pickup when you submit before 11:00 PM, subject to truck availability.

Photos sent after the desk closes on Friday at 11:00 AM get an answer once it opens again on Sunday at 7:00 PM. The desk does not work the Sunday 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM session.

Should I take the labels off?

No. Please keep labels and lot codes on the cases. We record them for traceability.

We already donate. Why sell to you?

Keep donating what is fit to donate. If it can't be sold, we'll help you donate it. Donations go to a nonprofit partner, which issues any receipt directly to you. Salida does not give tax advice, and is not affiliated with any food bank or food-rescue organization.

A sale to us pays you for product that still has a market, and the market's waste system charges by the pallet.

Long on product tonight?
